When the night program runs

The park says the Alcatraz Night Program runs Tuesday to Saturday. The operator adds that its Night Tour and Behind the Scenes Tour do not run on Sundays or Mondays, or on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, July 4, Thanksgiving, or Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The island itself is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. If your trip includes a Sunday or Monday, plan on a day sailing, and check the booking page for the dates that are actually offered.

The audio tour is included at night too

The park says the night program includes the audio tour and evening skyline views, and that some areas open by day are closed at night. The audio tour is the self-guided cellhouse tour that comes with a ticket for the island. What changes is the setting: you see the island and the city skyline in the evening rather than in daylight, and fewer areas are open to explore on the island itself.

What the day visit adds

A day visit has the whole island open to explore, including exhibits such as The Big Lockup, and the daily talks and programs run by park staff and volunteers. The orientation on arrival tells you what is on that day. Daylight also shows the island and the bay more clearly. The park says the evening offers special tours, talks and cell-door demonstrations too, so a night visit is not without live programs, but fewer daytime areas are open.

Booking either one

The park says tickets may sell out weeks ahead in summer and around holidays, and that applies to any sailing. If the night program is your priority, fix that date first, because it runs on only five days a week. Check the cancellation terms on whichever ticket you choose, since they vary between the operator and each listing. The operator's own tickets page offers free cancellation for cancellations made at least 72 hours before departure.

Comparing ticket terms

Rather than comparing prices here, compare what each ticket includes and how it can be cancelled. The booking page shows the live price and the terms. Look for island admission, the ferry and the audio tour, and check whether the listing is a night sailing or a day one. Confirm the date and sailing type before you pay. Packages that include Alcatraz are covered in the combo guide.

Which to pick

Choose a day visit if you want the most of the island open, the daily talks and programs, and daylight views. Choose the night program if you want the evening skyline views and your trip includes a day from Tuesday to Saturday. Both include the cellhouse audio tour. If neither fits your dates, check the other sailing before settling for a cruise around the island, which does not land.
