Where to book, and what to try when a date is full
Alcatraz sold out? How to get in
Where to buy Alcatraz landing tickets, how the operator's own sales compare with listings and packages, and what to try when your date is full.
View current sailings on Viator ↗Quick answer
Island landing tickets all come from one operator, Alcatraz City Cruises, so you are choosing where to buy, not whose boat to take. Book direct for the operator's own terms, or through a Viator listing if you want a bundle. If your date is full, try other dates, the Tuesday-to-Saturday night program, or a package that includes Alcatraz. Cruises around the island do not land. Check the NPS alerts page for closures before you book.

Why a sold-out date is different here
Every landing on Alcatraz arrives on one ferry. The National Park Service says the only way to reach the island is a ferry run by Alcatraz City Cruises from Pier 33, so there is no second boat to try and no landing from a private one. That is why dates fill. The park says tickets may sell out weeks ahead in summer and around holidays, and strongly recommends buying in advance. The operator says tickets are rarely available for same-day sailings. Sold out usually means that date, not that you are shut out.
Four ways to book, compared
The table sets out the main routes. Booking direct means the operator's own site, its phone line or the booth at Pier 33, and its tickets page lists the round-trip ferry, island admission, the Cellhouse Audio Tour and National Park Service programming. A Viator listing is a resold ticket or a package built around one. A bay cruise is a different product that sails past the island. Which route suits you depends on whether you value clear terms, bundled extras or one more place to look for an open date.
- Direct: the operator's own terms, in one place
- Viator listing: a bundle, or one more place to check a full date
- Bay cruise: the view from the water, no landing
Booking direct with the operator
Tickets are sold online, by phone and at the Alcatraz Landing booth at Pier 33, and the operator takes cards only, not cash. Its tickets page offers free cancellation for cancellations made at least 72 hours before departure. The operator also recommends buying from it directly and warns that tickets bought from people who approach visitors are often inflated and may be invalid. If you want the simplest terms and a single point of contact, this is the route to take. Check the cancellation terms on your own ticket before you rely on them.
Booking through a Viator listing
The Viator page for Alcatraz is a category page with dozens of listings, not one product. Several resell the island landing ticket, some add a guide, and others pair it with a bike rental, a bus pass, a sightseeing cruise or a Golden Gate Bridge visit. Each card shows its own cancellation terms, and only some offer free cancellation, so read the card rather than assuming. The operator notes that tickets from third parties may need proof of purchase, which can delay boarding, so keep your confirmation handy. Choose this route for a bundle, or when direct sales show nothing for your date.
If your date is sold out
Work through these in order. First, shift the date: the park's warning about selling out weeks ahead is tied to summer and holidays, so other periods give you more room. Second, look at the night program, which the park says runs Tuesday to Saturday. Third, check a package that includes Alcatraz admission and the ferry. Fourth, look again later, because seats sometimes reappear when tickets are cancelled. Do not buy from anyone offering tickets on the street. The operator warns that they are often inflated and may be invalid.
Packages and combinations
The operator says packaged tours that include Alcatraz are generally valid when the Alcatraz portion is priced the same as a direct ticket, so a bundle can be a legitimate way in. Before you book one, check that the card lists island admission and the ferry, not just a cruise past the island. Cards pair Alcatraz with a bike rental, a bus pass, a Bay sightseeing cruise, the Golden Gate Bridge, a city highlights tour or a full-day San Francisco tour. A bundle only pays off if you would use the extra parts.

Cruises that do not land
Some cards offer a cruise around Alcatraz, sold as a way to see the island from the water. These do not land. The operator's own Bay Discovery Cruise is a 90-minute cruise past Alcatraz and the San Francisco waterfront that does not dock on the island, so you will not enter the cellhouse or hear the audio tour. It suits you if you only want the view, or if the island is full for your dates. It is not a substitute if walking the island is the point.
The night program
The park says the Alcatraz Night Program runs Tuesday to Saturday. It includes the audio tour and evening skyline views, and some areas open by day are closed at night. The operator adds that its Night Tour and Behind the Scenes Tour do not run on Sundays or Mondays, or on several holidays. If day sailings are full on your date and you are in town between Tuesday and Saturday, it is the next thing to check. The night guide compares it with a day visit.

The island closes from time to time
Check the National Park Service alerts before you book. The island is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and the park says it closes rarely for extreme weather. The park can also close it for repairs, such as dock work, and posts that as a news item on its site. If your trip has fixed dates, read the cancellation terms on your ticket, and look at the NPS alerts again in the days before you travel.
Who this isn't for
If you only want to see the island and not land, a bay cruise is enough and the ticket routes here are more than you need. If you may need to cancel late, a listing with no free cancellation is the wrong pick, so check each card. If you are bringing a pet, the park does not allow pets on Alcatraz, though service animals are allowed wherever visitors are. And if you are counting on buying a ticket on the day of travel, the operator says same-day tickets are rarely available.
Frequently asked questions
Do Alcatraz tickets really sell out?
Yes, for some dates. The park says tickets may sell out weeks ahead in summer and around holidays, and strongly recommends buying in advance. The operator says tickets are rarely available for same-day sailings. Other periods give you more room, but book once your dates are fixed.
Can I buy Alcatraz tickets at Pier 33 on the day?
You can buy at the Alcatraz Landing booth, but the operator says same-day tickets are rarely available. Do not count on it, especially in summer and around holidays. Only cards are accepted, not cash. Book ahead and treat the booth as a backup.
Is a Viator ticket valid for Alcatraz?
Listings that include island admission and the ferry are generally valid. The operator says packaged tours with Alcatraz are generally valid when the Alcatraz portion is priced the same as a direct ticket. Third-party tickets may need proof of purchase, which can delay boarding, so keep your confirmation ready.
Do bay cruises land on Alcatraz?
No. A cruise around the island sails past it and does not dock. The operator's 90-minute Bay Discovery Cruise, for example, does not dock on Alcatraz Island, so there is no cellhouse visit or audio tour.
Does the night tour run every day?
No. The park says the night program runs Tuesday to Saturday. The operator says its Night Tour and Behind the Scenes Tour do not run on Sundays or Mondays, or on several holidays.
Can Alcatraz be closed when I visit?
Yes, from time to time. The island is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, rarely for extreme weather, and occasionally for repairs such as dock work. Check the NPS alerts page before you book and again before you travel, and read your ticket's cancellation terms.
