Why you can't just show up
One operator, one dock, one queue
Alcatraz City Cruises holds the exclusive National Park Service concession for island transportation — the NPS states plainly that this is the only authorized way to reach Alcatraz. No other boat lands visitors on the island. Every visitor, on every channel, ultimately books a seat on the same fleet.
Where to buy, and what actually differs
Island landing tickets all come from the same operator, Alcatraz City Cruises, whether you buy on its own site or through an authorized reseller. What differs between listings is the extras bundled with the ticket and the cancellation terms, so compare those, and check which dates still have a sailing.
Summer, holidays and the night program
The park says tickets may sell out weeks ahead in summer and around holidays. The night program runs Tuesday to Saturday and includes the audio tour and evening skyline views, so it is worth checking when day sailings are full.

How far in advance should I book Alcatraz tickets?
The park says tickets may sell out weeks ahead in summer and around holidays, and strongly recommends buying in advance. The operator says tickets are rarely available for same-day sailings. Other periods give you more room, but book as soon as your dates are fixed.
What happens if Alcatraz sailings are sold out for my dates?
Try other dates, the night program (Tuesday to Saturday) and packages that include Alcatraz admission and the ferry, and look again later, because seats sometimes reappear. Cruises around the island do not land. The island also closes from time to time, so check the NPS alerts page before you book.
Can I buy an Alcatraz ticket from someone else, or transfer mine?
Buy from the operator or an authorized seller. The operator warns that tickets bought from people who approach visitors are often inflated and may be invalid, and that tickets from third parties may need proof of purchase, which can delay boarding.
Is the night tour worth it over the day tour?
The park's night program runs Tuesday to Saturday. It includes the audio tour and evening skyline views, and some areas open by day are closed at night. A day visit has the whole island open and the daily talks and programs. The buyer and night guides compare the two.
What's actually included in a standard Alcatraz ticket?
The round-trip ferry from Pier 33, admission to the island, the Cellhouse Audio Tour and National Park Service programming, according to the operator's tickets page. Park talks and programs run daily and need no extra ticket.
What should I wear to Alcatraz?
Layers, always. The park advises a light jacket or sweater even if the day starts out nicely, because weather can change suddenly and the island is often chillier than the mainland. The what-to-wear guide has more.
